Reverse and Cure Type 2 Diabetes with Superior Nutrition

Superior nutrition, in the form of a balanced nutritional model, can be used to help defeat and reverse your Type 2 diabetes.  The Death to Diabetes wellness program uses such a model, that is referred to as the Super Meal Model Diet for Diabetics.

The "Death to Diabetes" Super Meal Model is more than "a diet". It is part of a comprehensive 10-step wellness program that is designed to improve the health of people suffering with diabetes. This nutritional model is also designed to address high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, and chronic fatigue.

The "Death to Diabetes" Super Meal Model has many of the attributes of the Mediterranean Diet, Zone Diet, South Beach Diet, and Asian Diet --  with nutritional modifications to address the root causes of Type 2 diabetes.

For the science behind the Super Meal Model, read about nutritional science and the  clinical studies that the author used to design the model.

The "Death to Diabetes" Super Meal Model is truly THE Diabetes Diet, because it is specifically designed to help control, beat, and reverse Type 2 diabetes -- by providing a more sustained level of energy and key nutrients that diabetics (and non-diabetics) are missing when they consume the more traditional grain-based, overly-processed, nutrient-poor or starchy meal.

The "Death to Diabetes" Super Meal Model has a very nutrient-dense protocol
that provides nutrients that are key to the effectiveness of THE Diabetes Diet including: Omega-3 EFAs, carotenoids, antioxidants, chlorophyll, magnesium, potassium, chromium, Vitamin E, Vitamin C, fiber, water.

In addition, by avoiding the grain-based breakfast, diabetics and non-diabetics will not experience the mid-morning “crash” or craving for processed food/beverages. Over time, the "Death to Diabetes" Super Meal Model diet will support blood glucose stabilization, cell repair and the regulation of the body's production and utilization of insulin.

Super Meal Model Diet Attributes:
  • More frequent meals (4 to 6 times/day)
  • Smaller meals (400-500 calories)
  • Macro-nutrient Balance
  • (Super Carbs, Proteins, Fats, Liquids)
  • Key micronutrients, i.e. vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals)
  • High Fiber Content (30-35g/day)
  • Fermented Foods (3-5 times/week)
  • Raw Vegetables (50%-80%)
  • Some Raw Fruits
  • Nutritional Supplementation (Food-based)
  • Minimum/No HFCS, PHO, nitrates, artificial sweeteners, food additives
  • Minimum/No caffeine, alcohol, drugs
Key Point: This is not a low fat diet! Ironically, low fat diets helped to make us fat!

Super Carbohydrates
include many bright, colorful and green, leafy vegetables, some dark, colorful fruits, and some specific organic whole grains (but, not wheat bread!).
Super Proteins
include cold-water fish, nuts/seeds, fermented soy, organic dairy, lean animal meats (i.e. chicken, turkey, organic beef), wild animal meat (i.e. bison, ostrich, deer). Note: If you are concerned about the mercury in fish, eat smaller fish or take an Omega-3 supplement.Super Fats include plant oils (but avoid clear vegetable oils or canola oil!), and the oil in nuts/seeds and cold-water fish.Super Liquids include filtered water, raw vegetable juices; some raw fruit juices; specific teas; and, a couple of the organic bottled juices.

Author's Note:

Superior nutrition has a bigger impact on glucose tolerance and insulin resistance more so than any other wellness factor, including exercise.

My background in biochemistry and engineering, and my research into pathology, etiology, and epidemiology has helped me to understand diseases such as diabetes at the cellular level.

As a result, I am able to design nutritional protocols that help the body successfully fight diseases/maladies such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, and chronic fatigue.  Once you understand the
science of disease and. the science of nutrition, it's a lot easier to design wellness solutions that will actually work.

Reverse and Cure Type 2 Diabetes with Cleanse/Detox

Cleansing/detoxification is a set of normal biochemical processes performed by the body to prevent and fight disease on a continual basis and to keep the body as healthy as possible. This cleansing/detoxification is optimized when we eat healthy foods the majority of the time.
However, in our fast-paced world it can be difficult to find the time to prepare healthy meals, especially, given the easy availability and accessibility of convenience and fast foods. Unfortunately, our bodies pay a heavy toll for eating unhealthy convenience foods, fast foods, and processed foods.
To compound the problem, our bodies are also bombarded with chemicals and pollutants on a daily basis from the air, water and environment. Under this heavy barrage of toxins, the cells become sick and the human body eventually reaches a point where it is no longer capable of flushing toxins and acid waste on its own. As the toxins and acid waste accumulate in the cells, blood, tissues, and organs, they trigger an increase in inflammation, the formation of pathogenic bacteria, fungus and mold, and lead to a state of poisoning commonly referred to as toxicity.

Common symptoms of toxicity include headaches, fatigue, increased allergy symptoms, overall aches and pains (particularly joint pain), and digestive discomfort. These symptoms occur when the body has become so clogged with toxins that it can no longer perform necessary functions effectively.
Toxins are generally acquired in one of three ways: through things we ingest (such as foods, drinks, drugs, etc.); through external sources (such as the air we breath, radiation, environmental chemicals, etc.); and, internally by the body’s own metabolic processes.
Over the past decade, extensive research has found that if the body’s detoxification system is sluggish, toxins will accumulate, slowing down cellular energy production and increasing the number of tissue-damaging free radicals. In addition, pathogenic bacteria continue to multiply faster than the immune system can kill them and remove their debris, creating an overloading and clogging of the lymphatic system and various organs.
This can eventually lead to various systemic diseases/ailments such as chronic fatigue, weight gain, high blood sugar, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, cancer, fibromyalgia, and Alzheimer’s. In the meantime, the body’s detoxification and excretory organs (e.g. colon, kidneys, liver, gallbladder, lymphatic system) struggle to effectively remove the toxins, excess glucose, and acid waste.
The liver is the primary organ that performs the detoxification. The liver accomplishes this by using specific enzymes to transform the toxins into intermediate chemicals; and, other enzymes to transform the intermediate chemicals into harmless water-soluble substances that are then excreted in the bile or urine. But, if the liver becomes sluggish, clogged, or impaired, these toxins can begin to accumulate in the body’s tissues and blood. Consequently, it is very important that the liver is kept as healthy as possible. Ironically, when we don’t feel well, we take an over-the-counter or prescription drug, which is toxic and only puts more stress on an already deteriorating liver and suppresses the symptoms, making us think we’re okay.
The colon (or large intestine) is important to cleansing and detoxification because it removes the unwanted fecal waste and other toxins. Discomfort in the colon usually manifests itself as something such as diarrhea or constipation. Unfortunately, our response to this is usually a drug, such as a laxative, to “force” the elimination of the fecal waste. But many of the other toxins are left behind and reabsorbed into the bloodstream attacking the tissues and organs, and producing their own pathogenic bacteria that attack the body’s weakest points. These attacks manifest themselves in the form of aches and pain in the back, joints, stomach, and head, and, then onto the other tissues and organs. This leads to more discomfort and more drugs, followed by more diseases, stronger drugs, hospital visits, and eventually death – unless the toxins are removed.
The kidneys are important to cleansing and detoxification because they filter the blood (210 quarts a day) by eliminating toxins and waste materials from the blood, and for maintaining the electrolyte balance by selectively eliminating some electrolytes while retaining others, according to the body’s needs. Electrolytes include sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium and chloride. These electrolytes are important because they are used by the cells to maintain voltages across the cell membranes and carry electrical impulses (e.g. nerve impulses, muscle contractions) across themselves and to other cells. The kidneys also help regulate other bodily functions by secreting the hormones renin, erythropoietin, and prostaglandin. Renin helps control blood pressure, erythropoietin stimulates the body to produce more red blood cells, and prostaglandin helps control blood pressure, muscle contractions, and inflammation.
The high levels of glucose in the blood and the accumulation of acids in the kidneys cause the formation of kidney stones and ultimately cause kidney cells to die. Because kidney cells cannot be regenerated or repaired, the remaining cells have to work that much harder to filter substances from the blood. To help with the filtering process, the heart increases the flow of blood plasma to the kidneys, which in turn elevates blood pressure. As the kidney cells continue to die, the risk of kidney failure increases dramatically.
The lymphatic system is also important to cleansing and detoxification. As the blood circulates, providing nutrients and oxygen to all parts of the body, the lymphatic system accumulates dead bacteria and toxins that need to be removed. Lymphatic vessels are situated intricately alongside blood vessels, relying upon body movement to move the lymph fluid around to collect and drain away toxins and dead bacteria through the lymph nodes and skin (pores).
If the colon, liver, kidneys, lymphatic system, and other body systems are working properly, the body will cleanse and detoxify itself to get rid of the toxins. And, as long as the body is provided with the proper nutrients, the body will continue to cleanse and detoxify itself.
However, if you have a systemic degenerative disease/ailment such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, indigestion, or constipation, then, your body and its cells are sick and full of toxins, and are unable to cleanse and detoxify properly. Consequently, you will need to eat “live” super foods to help your body with the cleansing and detoxification until your body is healthy enough to perform the cleansing and detoxification on its own.
If you want to further accelerate the detoxification process, you should drink at least 2 cups of raw vegetable juices (with 1 tbsp. ground flaxseed or wheat grass powder), followed by 2 cups of filtered water at least 2 times each day. Within a few days you should notice an increase in your regularity (bowel movements) and a better texture of your fecal waste.
Then, depending on your health state, within two to three weeks you should notice an increase in your energy level and a reduction in your cravings for the “dead” processed foods. These are indicators that your body is cleansing and detoxifying itself and initiating the healing process.
To further accelerate this healing, and depending on the severity of your health state, it may be necessary to use wholefood supplements and organic herbal products to nourish the colon, liver, gall bladder, lymph nodes, and kidneys while protecting them from oxidative damage during the cleansing/detoxification process.
Why is cleansing/detoxification necessary? Let’s take a car that has not had an oil change or engine tune-up and has been running on cheap fuel for several years. If you switch from the cheap fuel to a higher-octane “super” fuel, the car may run a little better, but it will still run sluggish. Once you change the oil and air filters and tune up the engine, the car will run even better. The same principle applies to the human body – if you clean the filters (the kidneys and liver), then, this will help them to remove the buildup of toxins and waste and kill the pathogenic bacteria and parasites so that the body will run better.
If you are overweight by more than 20 pounds, more than likely, you are carrying as much as ten pounds of fecal matter packed in your colon. If you are also struggling with high cholesterol or high blood pressure, then, your body is carrying extra fluid/waste in your cells and tissues.
Consequently, cleansing the liver and kidneys, your body’s primary filters, will help the body to better release this extra fluid/waste. This will thin out the blood, hydrate cells, break down fats, absorb protein, convert glycogen to glucose, turn on the body’s natural healing mechanisms, and, in most cases, lower blood pressure, inflammation, cholesterol, glucose levels, and body weight.

Death to Diabetes Book Defines "Diet for Diabetics" to Reverse Diabetes

Many of the diabetes books out there aren't worth the money because they don't really help address the real root causes of Type 2 diabetes at the cellular level.

Death to Diabetes book is different for 5 reasons:

  1. This book addresses the real root causes of Type 2 diabetes at the cellular level, and helps you to successfully fight the disease such that you will experience lower blood sugar readings within 10 to 14 days.
  2. This book was written by an engineer who understands medical science and engineering science, and leverages these sciences to design a nutritional program that attacks the diabetes and improves your health.
  3. This book was written by someone who was a diabetic and understands your frustration and anxiety dealing with this diseases and the drugs; and, explains how to overcome all the challenges.
  4. You buy "more than just a book" when you purchase the book from the author's Death to Diabetes web site. The author makes himself available to answer your questions!
  5. And, you don't have to buy the book to find out if the program will work for you -- just follow the steps of the Death to Diabetes program on Mr. McCulley's website.

The Death to Diabetes book defines a superior nutritional program for Type 2 and Type 1 diabetics. This "diet" can also be used for obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, chronic fatigue, and other systemic health issues.

This book is one of the few diabetes books that looks at diabetes from several aspects of medical science, including pathology, etiology, and epidemiology. The book also looks at diabetes from the aspect of several engineering sciences including reverse engineering, failure modes & effects analysis, root cause analysis, statistical engineering analysis, meta analysis, and process engineering.

As a result, the book provides a concise and easy-to-read set of procedures for a Type 2 diabetic to customize to his/her needs and get their diabetes under control within three months. Some diabetics even have the opportunity to reverse their diabetes and beat the disease, as identified in the testimonials and feedback from medical doctors.

The Diet for Diabetics to Reverse Diabetes: The 5 "Live", the 5 "Dead" Foods, Diabetic Recipes

From a nutritional perspective, there are what I'm calling the 5 "live" (or super) foods and the 5 "dead" foods. "Live" food is in reference to foods that are better at keeping us "alive". "Dead" food is in reference to foods that lead us to disease and early death.
Note: Most of these foods are well known by those of you involved in nutrition, so there shouldn't be any surprises here. There are many books already written that identify these foods as healthy or unhealthy. All I did was "package" the information into two categories to make it easier for me (to eat properly) during my recovery. Hopefully, it will make it easier for you.
The 5 "dead" foods include:
-- Refined flour, processed foods, e.g. white rice, potatoes, bread, macaroni, pasta, most cereals, most wheat products, crackers, pancakes, pastries, biscuits, spaghetti, mashed potatoes, other processed foods made with flour; and, starchy vegetables such as potatoes and corn

-- Refined sugar foods, e.g. cookies, cakes, pies, some cereals, ketchup, soda, diet soda, most bottled juices, candy, jams, jellies, foods made with refined sugar, sucrose, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, maltose, dextrose, molasses, brown sugar, artificial sweeteners, and honey
-- Saturated fats, e.g. cow's pasteurized milk, cow's cheese, most conventional animal meat
-- Trans fat/hydrogenated oil, e.g. processed foods, clear vegetable oils, fried foods, potato chips, store-bought baked goods, lunch meats, stick margarine, snack foods, most frozen dinners
-- Drugs, e.g. alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, OTC drugs, prescription drugs, recreational drugs

Key point: The "dead" foods (especially the refined carbs and trans fats) either cause blood glucose levels to increase leading to weight gain or they inhibit the body from burning fat leading to more fat storage! They are the key drivers of nutritional deficiency at the cellular level, triggering inflammation, oxidation, toxicity, acidity, and hormonal imbalance.

The 5 "live" (super) foods include:
-- Green, leafy vegetables, other bright-colored vegetables; some fruits (lemons, berries, but not tropical fruits, especially for most diabetics)
-- Pure or filtered water; water from raw juices (avoid tap water)
-- Monounsaturated/Omega-3 fats, e.g. extra virgin olive oil, wild salmon, sardines, tuna, other fatty fish
-- Lean protein, e.g. cold-water fish, beans, legumes, nuts, seeds
-- Some (organic) whole grains, e.g. quinoa, oat, barley (but, not wheat, especially for most diabetics); freshly-ground flaxseed

Key point: The "live" foods trigger the body's natural internal healing mechanisms to prevent, fight or reverse disease. As a result, these foods when eaten as part of a "super meal" reduce and prevent inflammation, oxidation, toxicity, acidity, and hormonal imbalance.

Super Meal Recipes (Examples)

Super Breakfast
2 cups steamed spinach (or 1½ cups steamed broccoli)
Optional: Add one-half of an orange/yellow/red pepper (sliced) to steam with the vegetable.
3 oz. baked wild salmon (or 3 oz. sardines, or an Omega-3 organic egg)
1 ½ Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil (add on top of the vegetables after steaming)
Add organic spices, including raw/aged garlic, to season the vegetables/fish
24 oz. filtered water (or 16 oz. filtered water, 1 cup white tea)
1-2 cups raw vegetable juice (optional)
Optional: Add 1 scoop of super greens powder (e.g. wheat/barley grass) to a glass of water or raw juice.

Super Snack
An apple (or pear/other whole fruit)
A handful of walnuts/almonds
A glass of filtered water

Super LunchA small salad (with Romaine lettuce, baby spinach, sprouts, onion, celery, cucumber, tomato, tuna, boiled egg, olive oil, apple cider vinegar)
Or, a bean salad, bean soup, or turkey sandwich
A glass of filtered water

Super Dinner1 cup steamed Brussel sprouts and 2 cups steamed broccoli
5 oz. baked skinless chicken breast (or 5 oz. wild salmon)
½ red pepper, mushrooms, spices
2 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil (add after steaming vegetables)
1 slice of sprouted grain bread (1½ tsp. extra virgin coconut oil)
24 oz. filtered water (or 24 oz. white tea)
1-2 cups raw vegetable juice
Optional Dinner: a raw salad that contains the aforementioned foods with Romaine lettuce, ground salba seed and organic salad dressing

Other Super Snacks
Kashi crackers, organic chips with peanut butter, almond butter, or cheese slices.
Whole fruit (blueberries, blackberries, apple, pear, banana, grapes), with a handful of nuts such as walnuts and/or almonds.
Popcorn (air-popped popcorn)
Small Salads: Romaine lettuce, tuna, boiled egg, olive oil, apple cider vinegar
Soup (Small Bowl): black bean, chickpeas, kidney bean, lima bean
Yogurt (low-fat plain) with wheat germ
Note: Always have a glass of filtered water before or after your meal.

Note: These super foods and super meals perform the same function as the drugs, but without the side effects!

The good news here is that if you embrace these super foods, you will be able to change your body's chemistry such that several months down the road, you will be able to enjoy your bread, pasta, ice cream, or potato chips -- without having the same adverse reaction to your blood sugar!

Of course, that doesn't mean you can go hog-wild, but, at least, you will be able to once again enjoy life and not be worried about eating the 'wrong' food.

Diabetes Engineer Reverses Type 2 Diabetes Despite Near-Death Diabetic Coma

Although there is no medical cure for diabetes, this disease (Type 2) can be defeated with knowledge, proper nutrition, exercise, testing, spiritual health, etc. I know because I used to be a (Type 2) diabetic.

Near-Death ExperienceThree years ago I went into a diabetic coma with a blood glucose level of 1337 -- more than twelve hundred points above normal. Despite a set of complications that included severe hyperglycemia, dehydration, two blood clots, pneumonia and four insulin shots a day, I was able to use my engineering and biochemistry background to methodically and completely wean myself off the drugs to lower my average glucose level to 88.5 mg/dl and my hemoglobin A1C to 4.4%, reversing my diabetes and requiring no drugs of any kind -- all in less than 4 months. I credit my recovery to God, the doctors and nurses, my mother, my daughter, my engineering background, and a set of unexplained accidents that guided me through his miraculous recovery.

As an engineer, I was trained to research, analyze, test, draw logical conclusions, and write technical reports based on complex engineering and machine data. Ironically, I was able to use that training to research, analyze, test and draw logical conclusions from the hundreds of clinical studies and other medical research to identify the 5 "super" foods that initiate the body's internal (biochemical) healing mechanism and the 5 "dead" foods that either make us diabetic or keep us diabetic. (I will expand upon this in future emails).

With a lot of encouragement from my daughter and various people from work, the local churches, various people in the wellness industry, and the two diabetic support groups I was running, I am trying to share my experience with as many people as possible. Hopefully it will inspire people the way I have been inspired -- by people I would never have met if it weren't for my experience with diabetes.

Take care and God bless.

Near-Death ExperienceAccording to everything I've read or heard about NDEs, I didn't have any of the classic Near-Death Experience (NDE) signs such as seeing any bright light or having an "out of body" experience.

While I was in the coma, the doctors had told my daughter to begin making arrangements -- that things didn't look good, my body was shutting down, there wasn't much time left ... When, I awoke from the coma, my daughter shrieked and the doctors were shocked. I heard one doctor say: "I can't believe it. He's alive. He's actually alive. He should be dead." Another doctor said, "He should be dead 10 times over. What do we do now?"

One of the doctors approached me and said "Mr. McCulley, we got some good news, and we got some bad news. The good news is that you're alive. The bad news is that we may need to amputate both your legs." I discuss this event during one of my lectures now on YouTube.

So I was "driven" to find the answer to why I had been in a near-death coma, and why the doctors felt that they needed to amputate both my legs. Every time I visited my doctor or stopped by the hospital, all I heard was "Mr McCulley, you should be dead, 10 times over. You are lucky to be alive."

But, my mother didn't believe in "luck" -- she said it was a blessing from God. She believed that God put into training for 30 years by Corporate America -- to learn everything I could about engineering, and use that knowledge to beat my diabetes, write the book, and then help other diabetics.

But there were events, that as a scientist, I can't explain logically. For example, after I came out of the coma, I was familiar with my condition, known as a "non-ketotic hyperglycemic hyperosomolar coma". My daughter said that one of the doctors in the hospital used that term while they were discussing my coma in another room. It's not clear how I was able to "recall" such a complicated medical phrase since I had never been in that room ...

I didn't experience the classic NDE signs, but I remember the dreams, the nightmares about the graveyard scene while I was in the coma -- but that was just a dream, not an NDE.

I also remember when I came out of the coma that I had been traveling and I was in a large room (like in a hotel) with my daughter (I could hear her voice, but I couldn't see her). There was a birthday cake and candles. There were people praying. I could hear other voices asking me questions, and I would answer the questions. People were laughing and applauding.

I didn't think about it anymore until a few years later, I was invited to speak at a health/wellness forum. It turned out that I was in a large room (in a hotel) with my daughter. We were standing in front of an audience of diabetics answering their questions -- some of this discussion is now on Youtube in a couple different videos. There are photos on my website of me and my daughter speaking at this event.

Another memory I had was of a doctor introducing me to speak, and a woman doing the same thing -- I couldn't see their faces, but I could hear them talking about my recovery from a near-death diabetic coma, and people applauding. This came to pass a few years, and part of it is on Youtube.

There were other images/memories I had while I was in the coma, but at the time they didn't make any sense. For example, the issue about the book title and the photo of the graveyard that I discuss here on my blog ...

And, there are so many 'accidents' that have happened to me since the coma event, but as I mentioned, my mother says there are no accidents -- she believes 'it was meant to be' ...

I also had a dream at that time about being dead or, at least I thought I was dead. In the dream, I could see myself walking towards a grave. As I got closer to the grave, I could see that the first letter of the name on the gravestone was "D" which is the first letter of my name. So, I thought that I was dead, and I would panic and wake up in a cold sweat -- realizing it was just a dream and that I wasn't dead.

When I told my mother about the dream (actually a nightmare, since I don't like graveyards), she said that because of the diabetic coma, God was trying to speak to me. So I said "So is God trying to tell me that I'm dead or going to die in the hospital?"

My mother said: "No, God is trying to tell you something, but you can't wake up from the dream out of fear that you are dead. You must have faith and follow through with the rest of the dream."
It took a couple nights, but I was finally able to watch myself during the entire dream sequence. When I finally got closer to the headstone on the grave site, I could see that the word on the gravestone did start with the letter "D", but the "D" was not for "DeWayne". The name on the headstone was "Diabetes"! But, at that time, I didn't really understand the power of that symbolism. I was just glad that my name was not on the headstone!

Later on, after my recovery, my mother told me that God spared my life, and that I should write a book about my experience with diabetes, the coma, the doctors, the hospital, the insulin shots, and more importantly how I recovered from the diabetic coma and the diabetes episode to get healthy and wean myself off the insulin -- even though the doctors said I would be on insulin for the rest of my life.

When the American Diabetes Association (ADA) heard about my diabetic coma and recovery, they asked me to share my story and I ended up working as a volunteer, running a diabetic support group for the ADA. In addition, various churches and community groups asked me to speak about my recovery from a diabetic coma and a blood glucose level of over 1300. During these speaking engagements, people would ask me if I planned to write a book. At the time, I said: "No, I have no plans to write a book."

But my daughter teamed up with my mother, and both of them kept after me to write a book about my diabetes experience. Instead, I put together a 10-page pamphlet that I handed out during my speaking engagements and at the ADA diabetic support group meetings. But, the pamphlet only drove more questions. I tried to answer the new questions by expanding the pamphlet, which grew to more than 75 pages.

At this point, my daughter said, "Dad, you gotta write the book!" And, when I tried to give my mother excuses for why I'm not qualified to write a book plus I didn't have the time, she said "Son, remember what your father told you when you were growing up? By the time you come up with all those excuses why you can't do something, you could have had it done by now."

If you knew my mother, you would realize that she wasn't going to give in, and that I had no choice. So, I finally relented to write the book, which I did during 2004 and 2005.

But, then, I needed a title for the book. The titles started out looking like this: "How I Beat Diabetes", "Living After a Diabetic Coma", "Surviving Diabetes".

Then, the book titles evolved into: "Surviving Death & Diabetes", Recovering From a Near-Death Diabetic Coma", "Recovery from "Death & Diabetes", "Surviving Death and Diabetes" "Surviving Death from Diabetes" ... but none of the titles clicked with me.

Then, one day while I was talking to my mother on the phone, she said: "The words death and diabetes keep coming up in your titles." My daughter noticed the same thing.

Finally one night, I had the dream again about the graveyard and the headstone with the word "Diabetes" on it. My mother reminded me that God was trying to tell me that "Diabetes" belonged in the graveyard, not the names of the people who are dying and will die from diabetes."

Then, it hit me -- what the title of the book should be. "Death to Diabetes"! In other words, put the disease in the graveyard instead of the people with the disease! Kill the disease instead of kill the people! Death to the disease instead of death to the people! Death to Diabetes! -- it made so much sense!

My mother liked the title -- short and sweet, and to the point. My daughter also liked the title. But, the publishers and the so-called book experts didn't like the title. They said it was too grim and too negative, and it didn't make sense. Plus, the title would mean that the first word in my wellness book would be "Death". Publishers told me that a wellness book with "Death" as the first word and with "Death" in the title of the book, that my book would not sell because it sounded too negative.

To further complicate matters, the publishers didn't like the photograph of a graveyard on the front cover. And, they didn't like the color of the book cover -- black. They felt that I would be sabotaging my own book sales with such a negative cover and negative book title. Also, they said that there were no other nutritional or wellness books with the word "Death" in the title or with a black cover. They said that most nutritional books were bright colors with titles of hope and positivity.

But, for some strange reason, I didn't listen to the experts ... I stuck with the book title, the book cover photo, and the color of the book cover.

UPDATE: 7/29/09:
And, like they say, the rest is history.

"Death to Diabetes" is now one of the top-selling diabetes books in the United States.

"Death to Diabetes" is gradually becoming the rallying cry of many diabetics who are fed up with the disease, the doctors, and the drugs; and are looking for a better answer. Many of them believe that the answer is "death to diabetes" instead of "death to them". They see the book "Death to Diabetes" as a way out, a beacon of hope. Many diabetics are encouraged when they hear my story -- because they realize that if I can make it back, maybe they can make it back, too.
